16th Annual Monaco Private Label Summit

Mission for Energy Transition

Description

The Principality of Monaco has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, compared with 1990 levels. To achieve this target and set the Principality on a course to carbon neutrality by 2050, the national action plan focuses primarily on the three sectors responsible for the highest greenhouse gas emissions: road transport, waste treatment and energy consumption in buildings. These account for around 90% of the country’s emissions (approximately 30% per sector). The energy transition means that we all need to act responsibly to protect our environment, while at the same time improving our quality of life and maintaining our health. This will require us to adopt new habits: using clean energy sources, but also being more restrained in the way we consume. To support this transition, H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince decided to establish the Mission for Energy Transition, which manages projects to limit greenhouse gas emissions and develop renewable energy. The Mission runs the National Green Fund to carry out specific, large-scale projects commensurate with the targets that have been set. It is a demonstration of the State’s firm determination, which must become something that belongs to all of us, without hampering our country’s economic development but instead actually creating new opportunities. To reach that point, we will need to be imaginative, creative and free of preconceptions to transform our country into a responsible society, one which consumes less energy and relies on renewable resources, and one which is fully committed to decarbonisation.
