Centre Scientifique de Monaco

Description

The Scientific Centre of Monaco is the research agency organized into three departments - marine biology, polar biology and medical biology. It also has a communicable disease analysis platform, which has been particularly active since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, as part of the screening and vaccination program implemented in the Principality. Essentially focused since its creation, more than 60 years ago, towards the study of radioactive and bacteriological pollution of the oceans, the Scientific Centre of Monaco has, since 1990, become internationally renowned regarding the knowledge of the biology of corals. It is now one of the world’s leading institutions on this subject, particularly in terms of understanding the effects of climate change on these animals, which are essential to the balance of the marine environment. This issue is also at the heart of the activities carried out by the Department of Polar Biology, which specialises in the study of penguin colonies in Antarctica. It aims to elucidate their mechanisms of adaptation to the constraints of their environment and its changes. Meanwhile, the Department of Medical Biology has developed several programs of studies on cells, as part of neuromuscular pathologies and cancers. The approach, both fundamental and applied, aims to transmit the results obtained in the laboratory to patients as quickly as possible, through the development of innovative therapeutic methods. The organisation participates in major international congresses, publishes more than 70 scientific papers each year, and its researchers, as experts, contribute to the international work of structures such as the United Nations. This underlines the vigour of the research and the relevance of the positioning of the Scientific Centre of Monaco, a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary structure, in which intra-departmental collaboration is at the heart of the quality of its results.
